Discover Flic en Flac Beach

Flic en Flac runs for several kilometres along the west coast and is one of the longest beaches in Mauritius. The lagoon in front of it is broad, shallow and unusually calm — the west coast sits in the lee of the island, sheltered from the prevailing wind, so the water here is often glassy when the east is choppy.

Behind the sand runs a deep belt of casuarina trees, and this is a large part of the beach's character. The shade is generous and continuous, which makes it comfortable to spend a whole day here rather than retreating indoors at midday.

It is also the island's main diving hub. Some of the best-known dive sites in Mauritius lie off this coast, and there is worthwhile snorkelling much closer in, over coral patches that sit only a short swim from the shore towards the northern end of the public beach.

And then there is the sunset. Facing due west across open lagoon, Flic en Flac has the most reliable sunset view in Mauritius — a genuine event most evenings, and the reason the beach fills up again in the last hour of daylight.
