About the Activity

What to Expect

Mauritius hides some of the Indian Ocean's most spectacular waterfalls and river gorges deep within its volcanic interior. MauTravel's waterfall and river trek experiences take you off the tourist trail and into landscapes of extraordinary natural beauty — thick jungle canopy, volcanic rock formations, and crystal-clear freshwater pools.

The undisputed highlight of any waterfall itinerary is the Tamarind Falls — also known as the 7 Cascades — a series of seven magnificent waterfalls cascading through a steep, forested gorge in the Tamarin area. Other unmissable destinations include the dramatically flat ledge of Rochester Falls, the powerful 500ft Waterfall, the tranquil Alexandra Falls, and the serene Eau Bleue and Léon waterfalls tucked away in the island's southern highlands.

Every trek is led by experienced local guides who know the safest river crossings, the best swimming pools, and the hidden viewpoints that make each journey unique. These are genuine wilderness experiences — not tourist paths — so you can expect mud, water, and memories that last a lifetime.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Most waterfall treks are rated moderate — they involve walking on uneven terrain, crossing streams, and scrambling over rocks. Participants should be reasonably fit and comfortable on rough ground. We do not recommend these treks for guests with serious mobility issues.

Water shoes or sturdy trekking sandals with grip are essential. Regular trainers are not suitable as they will get wet and can become slippery. If you don't have suitable footwear, please let us know and we can advise on rental options.

Yes — we only swim at locations that our guides have assessed as safe. We avoid swimming during or immediately after heavy rainfall when currents can be stronger. Your guide will assess conditions on the day and make the final decision on swimming.

Children aged 8 and above can join most waterfall treks with a parent or guardian. Some more challenging routes are adult-only. Please advise us of children's ages when booking so we can recommend the most suitable experience.

Tamarind Falls (7 Cascades) is widely considered the most spectacular and is our most popular trek. Rochester Falls is the easiest and most accessible, making it great for families. The 500ft Waterfall offers the most dramatic single cascade. We can recommend the best option for your group.
